Pavement Repairs to Begin after Labor Day and Continue in Spring 2018
(August 17, 2017) – The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) is preparing to improve pavement on several roads and highways in Allegany and Garrett counties. The pavement repairs will begin shortly after Labor Day and will be complete before winter.
In Allegany County, MDOT SHA’s contractor, Belt Paving, Inc. of Cumberland, will patch areas to improve the following roads:
• I-68 (National Freeway) between MD 144 (Naves Cross Road) and Orleans Road (22.4 miles).
• MD 53 (Winchester Road) between US 40 Alternate (National Pike) and MD 658 (Vocke Road) / (nearly one-mile).
• MD 51 (Oldtown Road) between Long Farm Road and East Wilson Road, S.E. (4.1 miles).
The improvements, which cost $750,000, are part of a larger $9.7 million contract which includes patching and sealing pavement cracks. This work is a small portion of $9.7 million contract which extends through 2019 and includes patching, sealing cracks and resurfacing the roads. MDOT SHA is identifying additional roads in the county to improve as part of the contract next year. Motorists can expect lane closures in non-peak hours.
In Garrett County, MDOT SHA’s contractor, Keystone Lime Company, Inc. of Springs, PA., will patch areas to improve the following roads:
• US 219 (Garrett Highway) between the Youghiogheny River Bridge and Harley Lane (3.5 miles).
• I-68 bridge approaches at MD 42 (Friendsville Road) and Maple Street.
• MD 495 (Bittinger Road) between Durst Road and US 40 Alternate (Main Street) (4.4 miles).
Crews will patch, mill (remove the top layer of asphalt), pave and restripe the road. Drivers can expect lane closures in non-peak hours.
Additionally, crews will perform crack sealing operations on I-68 between the West Virginia line and Keyser’s Ridge (13.7 miles). The $825,000 work is part of the $7.2 million contract which extends through 2019.
