New Driving Surface is Part of Safety and Enhancement Improvement Project

 

(August 11, 2017) – Later this month, the Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) will resurface one mile of MD 500 (Queens Chapel Road) between MD 208 (Hamilton Street) and MD 410 (East West Highway) in Prince George’s County. The resurfacing is the final part of a $10.6 million community safety enhancement project that started in 2014.

 

Crews will patch, remove the top layer of asphalt and then apply new asphalt and pavement markings on MD 500. Motorists can expect single lane closures Mondays through Fridays between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. and Sundays through Thursdays between  9 p.m. and 5 a.m. MDOT SHA can also work weekends between 9 p.m. Fridays until 5 a.m. Mondays. Equipment used for construction may be disruptive.

To date, crews have completed substantial portions of sidewalk, sidewalk ramp, driveway, median, curb and gutter and utility relocation work. Other improvements include new pedestrian lighting, a double-left turn lane from northbound MD 500 onto Belcrest Road, new pedestrian signals with audible pedestrian and countdown signals and construction of new bicycle-compatible lanes on MD 500.

MDOT SHA’s contractor for the work is Ardent Company, LLC of McLean, Va. Currently, 23,550 vehicles travel this section of Queens Chapel Road each day, with traffic projected to increase to 31,200 vehicles per day by 2030.
