Extended Lane Closure Needed for Project near Princess Anne

(March 15, 2016) – The Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration (SHA) is replacing the southbound US 13 (Ocean Highway) Bridge over Kings Creek in Somerset County, just south of Princess Anne.  The single-span concrete bridge will be replaced with 42-foot long pre-stressed concrete slabs and the existing bridge abutments will be modified to accommodate the new structure. .  Crews will replace half of the bridge at a time, a construction method that allows SHA to maintain one lane of traffic throughout the project.

Motorists will see US 13 southbound reduced to one lane at the bridge by early April.  With good weather, both southbound travel lanes over Kings Creek should be restored by late summer.  This project will not affect US 13 northbound.

The US 13 bridge over Kings Creek was originally constructed in 1962 and carries an average of 21,000 vehicles each day.  SHA awarded the $1.6 million construction contact to George & Lynch of Dover, DE.

Kings Creek originates east of Princess Anne and flows west into the Manokin River just south of the Deal Island Wildlife Management Area.  The Manokin feeds Tangier Sound and eventually the Chesapeake Bay.

This work is part of SHA’s system preservation program.  Statewide, SHA maintains more than 2,500 bridges and monitors structure conditions through a comprehensive biennial inspection program.
