Outer Loop Traffic to be Detoured onto MD 150 and MD 702 at Night; Motorists Urged to Plan for Extra Travel Time in Essex This Weekend
(February 17, 2016) – On Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights the Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration (SHA) will temporarily close and detour the outer loop of I-695 (Baltimore Beltway) at Exit 38, MD 150 (Eastern Boulevard) in southeastern Baltimore County. The complete closure will allow construction crews to set new steel girders for the bridge carrying the outer loop over Northeast Creek, a tributary of the Back River. The bridge is located between the MD 150 interchange and the I-695/MD 702 (Southeast Freeway) split.
SHA will begin the process of closing and detouring the outer loop at 9 p.m. each night; after 10 p.m., all motorists on the outer loop of the Beltway will be directed to use eastbound MD 150 and northbound MD 702 to continue to northbound I-695 toward Towson.
Crews will open all lanes of I-695 to traffic no later than 5 a.m. Saturday, Sunday and Monday mornings. Weather permitting, the weekend work will be complete 5 a.m. Monday, February 22.
In case of inclement weather this weekend, crews will continue the bridge work on the next possible night. SHA will use arrow boards, variable message signs and barrels to guide motorists through the work zone.

The weekend work is part of SHA’s $5.3 million project to replace the steel girder bridge. Weather permitting, the entire bridge project will be complete late fall 2016.
