(December 11, 2014) – With winter fast approaching, the Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA) will repair deteriorated pavement on MD 100 / MD 10 in the Pasadena area of Anne Arundel County.  For driver safety, SHA will patch the pavement on eastbound MD 10 (Arundel Expressway) and eastbound MD 100 (Paul T. Pitcher Memorial Highway) (where both highways converge – see map below) at the Jumpers Hole Road overpass just east of MD 2 (Ritchie Highway).

The work is weather permitting and requires complete closure of the roadway for 12-hour time periods:

• Friday night Dec. 12 at 10 p.m. through 10 a.m. Saturday Dec. 13 - all lanes closed

• Saturday night Dec. 13 at 10 p.m. through 10 a.m. Sunday Dec. 14 - all lanes closed

• Sunday night Dec.  14 at 10 p.m. through 5 a.m. Monday Dec. 15 – all lanes closed only if needed to finalize the work or due to rain delays

Crews will post detour signs to guide drivers through the area.  All traffic using eastbound MD 100 must exit onto MD 2 and motorists using MD 10 south must exit at MD 177 (Mountain Road).

“Without this repair there is an increased risk of further pavement deterioration over the winter, impacting traveler safety,” said SHA Administrator Melinda B. Peters. “The closure allows crews to get in, fix it, and get out. We appreciate drivers’ patience during the closure.”

The project is necessary to address deterioration of the pavement seams between travel lanes caused by heavy merging traffic, heavy rains and freeze-thaw cycles over the past several years. Using an asphalt mix that can be placed at cold temperatures, crews will patch across the roadway from the merge area to the MD 10 / 100 split and then continue south on MD 10 to the MD 2 intersection. SHA plans to return in 2015 to pave the eastbound travel lanes and install permanent pavement markings as well as to complete similar patching and paving on westbound MD 100 / MD 10.

Drivers are advised to prepare for extra travel time and should plan alternate routes.  Peak daily traffic volumes between Pasadena and Glen Burnie exceed 76,000 on MD 100 and 51,000 on MD 10.  While these numbers drop significantly east of MD 2, the combined volume at the MD 10/100 merge is approximately 60,000 vehicles a day.

SHA is completing this work using a $10.7 million area-wide patching and paving contract awarded to American Infrastructure of Fallston. Customers with questions about this project may contact the District 5 Office at 410-841-1000 or toll-free at 1-800-331-5603 or by email at shadistrict5@sha.state.md.us.

While SHA and its partners work hard to maintain safe traffic mobility in work zones, each driver needs to actively modify his or her driving style to help prevent crashes. Stay alert – look for reduced speed limits, narrow driving lanes and highway workers.  Slow down and don't follow too closely. Safer Driving. Safer Work Zones. For Everyone!
