(August 6, 2014) - The Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA) is replacing a deteriorated pipe culvert on MD 648AA (Asbury Drive) over Cattail Creek in the Severna Park area of Anne Arundel County. To expedite pipe replacement, SHA must close a section of Asbury Drive at the work area for up to 10 days beginning Sunday, August 10.

Crews will post signs for the detour along MD 648 (Baltimore-Annapolis Boulevard), MD 2 (Ritchie Highway) and Robinson Road / Leelyn Drive.  Motorists are urged to plan ahead, select alternate routes and travel during off-peak times during the closure.  Utility relocation work began in spring to prepare for the project.

Work includes excavation, installation of a new 42-inch concrete pipe and headwalls, landscaping/reforestation, installation of the existing fish ladder and minor paving.  Asbury Drive is scheduled for a complete resurfacing from MD 648 to Robinson/Leelyn later this year under a separate contract.

Cattail Creek is a tributary of the Magothy River headwaters.  Replacement of the pipe culvert, reuse of the fish ladder and restoration of the surrounding area will help maintain a thriving wetland area and ensure stormwater runoff is managed in a safe and environmentally-responsible manner.

Crews will use portable variable message signs to post a new date if the closure is rescheduled due to weather or construction-related delays. SHA awarded the $680,000 contract, which includes time incentive/disincentives, to Concrete General of Gaithersburg.

SHA thanks area residents and the nearly 7,000 daily roadway travelers who use Asbury Drive for their patience during the closure and construction work. Customers with questions about this project may contact the District 5 Office at 410-841-1000 or toll-free at 1-800-331-5603 or by email at shadistrict5@sha.state.md.us.
