(April 14, 2014) - The Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA) will perform a traffic switch on US 1 (Baltimore Avenue) between Contee Road and the Muirkirk Road Bridge tonight from 10 p.m. until 5 a.m. Tuesday morning, weather permitting. This traffic switch will temporarily relocate the southbound traffic lanes onto new pavement and will divide the northbound travel lanes. This work is related to the last segment of the ICC, which will terminate at US 1.

Motorists should expect single lane closures in each direction on US 1 between Contee Road and the Muirkirk Road Bridge in preparation for the traffic switch. Lane closures are necessary for milling, paving, tie-in, and striping operations between the current lanes and the adjacent new pavement.  Crews will maintain at least one lane of traffic during construction.  Motorists may want to consider using I-95, MD 295 or US 29 as alternate routes during the traffic switch.

The temporary traffic configuration will result in crews shifting the southbound lanes onto new pavement and separating the northbound lanes by concrete barrier. The temporary alignment will be in place for the next few months. This traffic configuration will allow the contractor to perform necessary work in the space barricaded off.

Motorists should expect delays during the lane closure periods. SHA will use portable message signs, cones, and barrels to guide motorists through the work zone during the lane closures and traffic switch.

SHA reminds motorists to reduce speeds and stay alert for work crews. For more information about the project, please call the ICC Community Outreach staff at 1-866-462-0020.

While SHA and its partners work hard to maintain safe traffic mobility in work zones, each driver needs to actively modify his or her driving style to help prevent crashes. Stay alert – look for reduced speed limits, narrow driving lanes and highway workers. Slow down and don’t follow too closely. Safer Driving. Safer Work Zones. For everyone!
