​Drivers Should Remain Alert for Work Crews and Lane Shifts 

(May 2, 2024) - The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration will begin the final resurfacing phase at the improved MD 228 (Berry Road) and Western Parkway intersection​ in Charles County next week. The project will be complete by the end of May, weather permitting.  

Starting Monday May 6, crews will work overnight, 9 p.m. to 5 a.m., Sundays – Thursdays, weather permitting. Drivers should remain alert for lane shifts, crews, and equipment while construction work is underway. 

The safety and access improvement project included: 

  • Constructing an additional left-turn lane on eastbound MD 228 (Berry Road) to northbound Western Parkway to improve safety and operations; 
  • Enhancing pedestrian access with construction of Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)-compliant sidewalks and ramps, including related signal timing modifications; 
  • Constructing new concrete curbs and gutters, stormwater management facilities and storm pipes. 
  • Installing new storm drain inlets and pipes; and 
  • Installing new pavement markings and upgraded line striping. 

SHA contractor Reliable Contracting Company Inc. of Gambrills will use temporary traffic signs, portable variable message signs and barrels to guide drivers through the work zone.
