Drivers Can Expect Off-Peak Lane Closures on I-81 and I-70 and a Total Closure and Detour on US 522

(November 30, 2023) - The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration will begin several patching projects in Washington County next week. All pavement improvement work should be complete by December 23, weather permitting.

I-70

The State Highway Administration will improve the pavement on I-70 between Pennsylvania State line and the Frederick County line. The work will begin on December 3. Drivers can expect single lane closures Mondays through Fridays 8 a.m.-8 p.m., west of MD 63 (Greencastle Pike) and Sundays through Thursdays 8 p.m.-5 a.m., east of MD 63.

I-81

Pavement improvements will also take place on I-81 between I-70 and the Pennsylvania State line beginning on December 3. Motorists can expect periodic single lane closures Sundays through Thursdays 9 p.m.-5 a.m.

US 522

The State Highway Administration will improve the driving surface on southbound US 522 at Limestone Road in Hancock. To expedite the project, crews will close and detour southbound US 522 at Limestone Road 9 p.m.-5 a.m. on or about December 3. The closure and detour will be lifted by 5 a.m. December 10, weather permitting.

During the temporary closure, motorists will be detoured from southbound US 522 to Limestone Road to MD 144 (Main Street) to Blue Hill Road and back to southbound US 522.

C. William Hetzer, Inc. of Hagerstown, is the contractor for these pavement improvement projects and will use arrow boards, cones, barrels, and detour signs (for US 522) to guide motorists safely through the work zones.

The State Highway Administration understands that roadwork will inconvenience travelers and asks all motorists to please stay alert and be patient while driving through work zones.
