Preliminary Designs and Recommended Alternatives to be Presented May 18

(May 10, 2023) – The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration, in collaboration with Prince George’s County, will host a Virtual Public Meeting from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday, May 18, on the I-95/I-495 at Medical Center Drive Interchange Project in Largo. At the meeting, the team will present preliminary design concepts designed to address existing congestion, accommodate future growth and improve pedestrian and bicycle connectivity.

“Improvements at this critical interchange will support current and development for the Largo Town Center, Blue Line Corridor and Largo Medical Center projects,” said Maryland Department of Transportation Secretary Paul J. Wiedefeld. “By expanding connectivity across all modes of transportation we can deliver reliable, equitable access to jobs, health care and economic growth for all of our customers.”

The recommendations come after analysis of alternatives and environmental considerations, as well as public input from a November 2022 virtual public meeting.

The project has been identified by Prince George’s County as its top State Highway Administration priority and is vital to the area’s vision and development as noted in the Prince George’s County Plan 2035. Funding from the federal Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act will assist in moving the project to construction.

“We are committed to delivering projects that support safety, mobility for all users and a state of good repair for our infrastructure,” said State Highway Administrator Tim Smith. “Working with our Prince George’s County partners, we will deliver interchange improvements for the Capital Beltway at Medical Center Drive that will support current and future development for some of the county’s top transportation priorities.”
