Work to Begin on ADA-Compliant Sidewalk and Ramps Along MD 355 in Urbana; Single-Lane Closure Necessary for Work Zone Safety

(March 7, 2023) – The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration is continuing work on a $1.7 million project improving pedestrian safety and accessibility at three locations in Frederick County: MD 355 (Worthington Boulevard) between Lew Wallace Street and MD 80 (Fingerboard Road) in Urbana; southbound MD 355 (Urbana Pike) between Holiday Drive and Lowes Lane in Frederick; and US 40 Alternate (West Main Street) in Middletown.

Crews will begin work in Urbana this week while continuing work in the Middletown section. Work in Frederick was recently completed. Work in the Urbana community is the largest section of the project. Crews will remove the brick sidewalk and construct a concrete sidewalk at the request of the Villages of Urbana that is compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

Single-lane closures will occur on MD 355 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Mondays through Fridays. Pedestrian access will be maintained throughout construction and existing trees and shrubs will not be impacted. The project is funded by State Highway’s ADA Program and includes:

  • replacing brick walkways with new concrete walkways;
  • constructing new sidewalk, ramps, curb and gutter;
  • installing new detectable warning surfaces to sidewalks at crossings;
  • resurfacing the shared-use path and
  • adding new pavement markings.
