(February 3, 2021) – The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) will detour I-70 (Dwight Eisenhower Highway) in Big Pool on Thursday, Feb. 4 and again on Monday, Feb. 8, for bridge work. Starting at 8 p.m. both nights, crews will close and detour I-70 at MD 56 (Big Pool Road) through 5 a.m. the next morning.

This reflects a change from a previously announced schedule.

The detour is part of a project to rehabilitate the MD 56 bridge, which was originally constructed in 1964. Learn more about the project HERE.

Crews will detour eastbound I-70 tonight and then I-70 westbound will be detoured on Thursday. Each night, the work will begin with a left lane closure at 8 p.m., with a full detour in place by 11 p.m.

MDOT SHA contractor, Concrete General, Inc. of Gaithersburg, MD,  will be conducting the work.   A flagging operation will guide motorists through the detour.  Portable message signs, along with barrels and road closure signs will be in place along I-70.
