(December 29, 2020) – The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) has completed an urban reconstruction project that includes new sidewalks and a traffic signal along MD 180 (Jefferson Pike) in Jefferson, Frederick County.

“The improvements completed on MD 180 strengthen access to local businesses and will improve safety and traffic flow throughout Jefferson,” Governor Larry Hogan said. “This project is important to Frederick County, and reflects on our commitment to invest in infrastructure that benefits our communities and our economy.”

MDOT SHA contractor, L.W. Wolfe Enterprises Inc., of Myersville, performed the work on MD 180 between MD 383 (Broad Run Road) and Old Holter Road. The $7.3 million project includes:

  • New sidewalks that are compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act.
  • Upgraded drainage systems.
  • New curbs and gutters.
  • A new traffic signal.
  • Roadway resurfacing and landscaping.

“These improvements along MD 180 follow through on MDOT’s commitment to improve mobility and safety for drivers and pedestrians,” said MDOT Secretary Greg Slater. “The community of Jefferson has been a tremendous partner throughout the design, planning and construction of this project. We thank residents and businesses for their collaboration and patience. The result is a roadway that will enhance community life for decades to come.”

“This project is a true asset for Jefferson, and takes another step toward accomplishing our mission by enhancing traffic flow and safety for motorists, residents and business owners,” said Administrator Tim Smith.

While the project is substantially complete, crews will be on-site to finish some punch list work. Landscaping may be completed in the spring depending on temperatures. To learn more about this project, visit the webpage HERE.

The MD 180 project is an example of the work completed by MDOT SHA during the COVID-19 emergency while focusing on the health and safety of work crews and the public. MDOT SHA works hard to maintain safe traffic mobility in work zones for our crews as well as our customers.  Drivers need to stay alert, focus on driving and, look for reduced speed limits, as well as other driving pattern changes. Drive like you work here and slow down in construction zones.
