(November 20, 2020) – The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) will detour bridge traffic for work on MD 355 (Urbana Pike) over Bennett Creek in Frederick County tomorrow, Nov. 21.

Crews will switch traffic from MD 355 between Campus Drive and Big Woods Road to a new temporary roadway around the work zone. Motorists can expect single lane closures during the switch with a flagging operation from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

MDOT SHA’s contractor, Concrete General, Inc. based in Gaithersburg, will also use signs, barrels and cones to alert motorists and help them navigate through this section of MD 355.

This work is part of a $17 million project to replace the bridge originally built in 1924. When the project is complete in spring 2022, the new bridge will be more than three feet higher to allow greater water flow and reduce flooding. This project will also help prevent erosion by stabilizing 2,300 feet of Bennett Creek.

MDOT SHA works hard to maintain safe traffic mobility in work zones for our crews as well as our customers.  Drivers need to stay alert, focus on driving and, look for reduced speed limits, as well as other driving pattern changes.  Drive like you work here and slow down in construction zones.
