Motorists Should Expect Daytime Delays during Construction

(May 20, 2009) – Next week, the Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration (SHA) will begin resurfacing along MD 273 (Telegraph Road) from east of Maple Heights Lane to MD 272 (North East Road) in Rising Sun, Cecil County. Weather permitting, construction will be complete by mid-June.

SHA will patch and resurface approximately four miles along MD 273. Single-lane closures will occur Monday through Friday between 6:30 a.m. and 6:30 p.m.; traffic flaggers will alternate traffic on the two-lane road. SHA will also use electronic variable message signs, safety cones and drums to guide motorists through the work zone.

Although the road will remain open to the public, motorists traveling to local schools, businesses and parks should expect delays during their morning and evening commutes. Citizens planning to use MD 273 to reach Rising Sun Elementary, Middle or High Schools; Calvert Elementary or Diddie Richardson Park may wish to use an alternate route. Patrons of the Plumpton Park Zoo, located on Telegraph Road, should allow extra travel time.

SHA awarded the $644,000 project to Kinsley Construction, Inc. Citizens who have questions about MD 273 or any other State numbered roadway in Cecil County should call SHA’s District 2 office at 410-778-3061 or toll-free at 1-800-637-9740.

As temperatures continue to rise over the next several months, work zones will be an increasingly familiar sight along state and local roadways. SHA encourages all motorists to drive responsibly, Choose Safety for Life and “Think Orange,” which is the color of construction signs and warning devices. While driving through highway work zones, protect our workers, as well as yourself and your passengers by driving the speed limit and remaining alert at all times.
