Streetscape Project to Improve Safety, Ride Quality, Pedestrian Access; Summertime Road Closure on Edgewood Road to Begin on or about June 23

(June 13, 2008) -- The Maryland State Highway Administration will soon begin to improve MD 755 (Edgewood Road) for approximately one mile between MD 24 (Emmorton Road) and Willoughby Beach Road in the Edgewood area of Harford County. The $3.5 million streetscape project includes replacement of a box culvert carrying Edgewood Road over a tributary of Otter Creek. This work will require a temporary road closure and detour to begin on or about June 23.

The section of Edgewood Road located between Cedar Drive and Willoughby Beach Road will be closed to traffic beginning on or about June 23. An official posted detour route will direct motorists to use Trimble Road and Emmorton Road as alternative routes until late August. During construction work, single lane closures with flagging operations may take place along other sections of MD 755 between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Monday – Friday, and between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. Sunday – Thursday.

This section of Edgewood Road will re-open to traffic before Harford County Public Schools begin on August 25. The entire project is slated for completion summer 2009.

The Edgewood Road project also includes: relocation of utilities where needed; milling and resurfacing existing pavement; widening pavement where needed; construction of new curb and gutter on northbound and southbound Edgewood Road for the length of the project; construction of new sidewalk along northbound Edgewood Road (east side) for the length of the project; reconstruction of sidewalk ramps to meet current Americans with Disabilities (ADA) guidelines; drainage improvements; stormwater management, sediment and erosion control measures; landscaping; and installation of new traffic signals, signs and pavement markings.

For more information about the construction process or traffic operations during the Edgewood Road improvement project, citizens may contact SHA’s District Four Construction Office at 410-321-2800, toll free at 800-962-3077, or by e-mail at SHADistrict4@sha.state.md.us. SHA and the contractor, Daisy Concrete of Newport, DE, appreciate the community’s understanding and patience during the construction process, and remind all travelers to look ahead for temporary traffic signs, detour routes, and construction personnel and equipment throughout the work zone.

During the next several months, when warmer temperatures dominate, work zones will be an increasingly familiar sight along state and local roadways. On any one day, there could be more than 350 work zones. Remember that work zones are not only large construction projects possibly taking years to complete, but smaller, mobile operations such as mowing, pothole repair and litter pick ups. When workers are on the road, THINK ORANGE, which is the color of construction signs, barrels and warning devices. Please slow down, stay alert and expect the unexpected.
