Motorists and Truckers Should Expect Nighttime Single Lane Closures

(April 11, 2017) – Beginning the week of April 17, the Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (SHA) will resurface more than one-mile of U.S. 1 (Washington Boulevard) between the Baltimore County line and MD 103A (Montgomery Road) in Elkridge.  The $1.7 million project will be complete mid-summer, weather permitting.

SHA will grind (remove the top layer of asphalt,) pave and stripe U.S. 1, which was last resurfaced in 1994.  Additionally, crews will replace guardrail within the project limits.

Nearly 25,000 vehicles use this section of US 1 each day, including more than 2,000 trucks on average. To minimize delays to motorists, most of the work will take place at night between 8 p.m. and 5 a.m.  SHA’s contractor, CJ Miller of Hampstead, can also close a single lane between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Mondays through Fridays.  Motorists are encouraged to add extra commuting time and to consider using I-95 as an alternate route to avoid delays.

Crews will close one lane and use barrels, dynamic message signs and arrow boards to guide motorists through the work zone.  April is work zone safety awareness month.  Motorists are urged to “Think Orange” and slowdown and pay close attention in work zones.
