(July 2, 2015) – This weekend, thousands of Marylanders and visitors will travel State highways to celebrate the Independence Day holiday weekend. As everyone prepares to enjoy the festivities, the Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration (SHA) reminds travelers to drive safely and stay alert for pedestrians walking to and from local events and celebrations.  SHA will suspend all non-emergency interstate construction Friday morning July 3 at 9 a.m. until Monday morning July 6 at 9 a.m. 

“Between cookouts, fireworks celebrations, beach-bound traffic and parades, thousands of people are driving, walking and biking this holiday weekend. Travelers should allow plenty of travel time and have a plan B in place should there be unexpected delays or heavy traffic,” said Acting SHA Administrator Douglas Simmons.  “Of course, always drive sober and buckle up everyone in the vehicle, which is State law. After you pack your bags, ensure that your vehicle is road ready with fluids, proper tire inflation and stocked with emergency tools such as jumper cables.”

SHA’s emergency response units will patrol major roadways throughout the holiday weekend.  Sponsored by State Farm™, the patrols assist stranded motorists with flat tires and other vehicle issues as well as respond to incidents. Travelers may call #77 on mobile phones if they spot someone in need or require assistance themselves.

While SHA is suspending all non-emergency construction activity, drivers need to be prepared for other holiday traffic impacts. Communities statewide will hold various events to celebrate Independence Day.  Pedestrians, cyclists and drivers should remain alert when crossing or turning at intersections, and obey local law enforcement officials who are assisting with events. There will be some State roads closed to accommodate parades, concerts and other local events.  Local event and closure times may vary; please check town and event sponsor websites for details.
