(December 8, 2011) – Drivers traveling along MD 213 (Augustine Herman Highway) in Cecil County are now experiencing safety benefits of a newly installed center lane allowing left turns in both directions south of Bohemia Manor High School and just north of the C&D Canal.

The State Highway Administration (SHA) modified the roadway which was originally designed for limited access as the major north-south roadway though southern Cecil County.  Increased growth and traffic in Chesapeake City created operational challenges along MD 213.

SHA traffic studies indicate nearly half of all crashes along the MD 213 corridor were rear-end crashes.  Congestion occurred in the travel lane as drivers waited to make left turns. By installing the new center bi-directional left turn lane, SHA expects the high number of rear-end crashes to be reduced and improve the overall safety of MD 213.  Even with the additional two-way turn lanes, six to 10-foot road shoulders will maintain bicycle compatibility along the MD 213 corridor.

SHA awarded the $200,000 contract was to American Infrastructure, Inc. of Baltimore.
