Motorists Should Expect Overnight Work Next Week with Lane Closures and Partial Ramp Closures on I-81 South Between Exit 5 and Exit 2

(August 1, 2024) - The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration will start an overhead sign replacement project on southbound I-81 between US 11 (Virginia Avenue)/Exit 2 and Halfway Boulevard/Exit 5 beginning Sunday, August 4. The sign replacements should be complete by August 8, weather permitting.

Crews will work Sunday through Thursday from 9 p.m.to 5 a.m. Drivers can expect nightly lane closures and partial ramp closures. The State Highway Administration’s contractor, Baldwin Line of Elkridge, MD, will use electronic message boards, barrels, and cones to guide motorists safely through the work zone. They will also use assistance from Maryland State Police.  Drivers should plan additional driving time during the sign replacement project.

The State Highway Administration appreciates motorists’ patience as we complete this necessary inspection and maintenance work. Drivers are asked to slow down in the work zone for the safety of all drivers and the crews working to improve our roadways.
