The ATMS is used to identify and track traffic flow disruptions using Closed Circuit TV (CCTV), Traffic Sensor Systems (TSSs – microwave traffic flow detectors) and remote weather stations. The system enables personnel to send responders to correct disruptions and to notify the public using Dynamic Messaging Signs (DMSs) and Highway Advisory Radio (HAR) devices. Traveler information from CHART systems is accessible to the public through the Maryland 511 website and the interactive GIS Mapping Application which displays traffic and road conditions, incidents, route restrictions, and weather-related data.
