(June 10, 2019) – On June 14, the Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) is planning to replace the MD 638 (Parkersburg Road) Bridge over the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad (Great Allegany Passage) Allegany County. The bridge, which is 30-foot long, will be replaced with a similar style bridge called a “Mabey Bridge”. The new bridge will be in place and MD 638 will reopen on June 28, weather permitting.
The nearly five-mile MD 638 detour will use US 40 Alternate (National Highway) and MD 36 (Mt. Savage Road). Crews will also need to close a single lane near the assembly area at the end of the bridge. Access to homes will have access up to the closure, except on Snow Bird Lane, where the detour route will be necessary. Approximately 1,500 vehicles per day cross this bridge, so motorists are encouraged to provide extra travel time during the bridge replacement project.

MDOT SHA works hard to maintain safe traffic mobility in work zones for our crews as well as our contractor. Drivers need to stay alert, focus on the road and look for reduced speed limits, narrow driving lanes and highway workers. Drive like you work here and slowdown in construction zones.
