Motorists Can Expect Nighttime Single and Double Lane Closures

(June 12, 2018) – Tonight, the Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) will begin a Pavement patching project on I-70 between Ridge Road and the Washington County line in western Frederick County. The $1 million project will be complete mid-summer.

Crews will patch deteriorated sections of pavement on nearly nine miles of I-70 and improve line striping where required. Additional work includes improvements where applicable to roadside shoulders.

MDOT SHA’s contractor, F.O. Day Inc. of Gaithersburg, will begin the project on eastbound I-70 and are permitted close one or two lanes during work. Motorists can expect lane closures on eastbound I-70 between 7 p.m. and 4 a.m. and on westbound I-70 between 9 p.m. and 7 a.m. Approximately 71,200 motorists travel on this section of I-70 each day, but traffic volumes drop off in the evening and overnight hours.

By June 30, the end of the State’s 2018 fiscal year, MDOT SHA will have resurfaced or treated half of all state highway lane miles since 2015. This milestone marks the improvement of nearly 8,500 lane miles, calculated by miles of highway multiplied by the number of lanes, improving safety and enhancing the customer experience for millions of drivers across the state.

While MDOT SHA and its transportation partners work hard to maintain safe traffic mobility in work zones, each driver needs to actively modify his or her driving style to help prevent crashes.
