1/24/2011SHA begins MD 97 Resurfacing Project
STATE HIGHWAY ADMINISTRATION RESURFACES PORTION OF MD 97 IN MONTGOMERY COUNTY Project Will Improve Ride Quality and Upgrade Traffic Signals Next week, the Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA) begins a $3.6 million safety and resurfacing project on more than 3.5 miles of MD 97 (Georgia Avenue) between MD 28 (Norbeck Road) and Glenallan Avenue in the Wheaton and Aspen Hill communities. Weather permitting, construction should be complete this fall. SHA will patch, grind and resurface all lanes of Georgia Avenue between Norbeck Road and Glenallan Avenue. Crews will also: • repair existing storm water inlets • install landscaping • upgrade signals to audible/countdown pedestrian signals (APS/CPS) • install new pavement markings. In the next few months crews will do minor concrete and signal work as weather and temperatures permit. During construction, drivers will encounter single lane closures both directions of Georgia Avenue Monday through Friday between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. and between 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. Double lane closures will occur overnight, seven days a week, between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m., with additional single lane closures Saturday and Sunday between 5 a.m. and 9 p.m. The work is necessary to improve the ride quality for motorists on Georgia Avenue through Wheaton and Aspen Hill as well as improve pedestrian access local businesses, churches, and schools. The existing pavement is showing signs of deterioration in the form of ruts and cracks. This section of Georgia Avenue carries an average of over 114,000 vehicles daily. The contract was awarded to F.O. Day Co., Inc. SHA will provide variable message signs, drums, and arrow boards to guide motorists through the work zone.
