7/30/2010Work on the VA side of WWB will cause delays

ALERT – ALERT

Capital Beltway Outer Loop (I-95/495 North) Reduced to One Lane

OVERNIGHT AND INTO AFTERNOON July 30 – 31

Motorists Strongly Urged to Use Alternate Routes

Motorists are urged to stay away from the Outer Loop of the Capital Beltway (I-95/495 N) the early part of this weekend, as multiple lane closures are required for the realignment of a ramp from Telegraph Road onto the Outer Loop. The existing ramp from Telegraph Road North to the Outer Loop (I-95/495N) will close after the evening rush hour on Friday, July 30. The Outer Loop LOCAL lanes will be narrowed to one lane, starting at 10:00 p.m. All THRU lanes will be closed at this time.

Crews expect to open an additional LOCAL lane and one THRU lane early Saturday morning, with all lanes open to traffic by 3:00 p.m. Saturday, July 31.

Detailed lane and ramp closures:

  • Friday, July 30 – Evening:
    • Ramp from Telegraph Road North to the Outer Loop (I-95/495N) closes following evening rush hour
      • Detour: Motorists should take Telegraph Road North to the Inner Loop (I-95/495 South) to Telegraph Road South to the ramp to the Beltway Outer Loop.
    • 10:00 p.m. Outer Loop LOCAL lanes narrowed to one lane
    • 10:00 p.m. Outer Loop THRU lanes closed
  • Saturday, July 31 – Early morning (approximately 6:00 a.m.):
    • Additional lane opened on Outer Loop LOCAL lanes (total of two lanes available to motorists)
    • One lane opened on Outer Loop THRU lanes
  • Saturday, July 31 – 3:00 p.m.:
    • All lanes restored to traffic

Major traffic back-ups are expected, particularly Saturday morning as traffic volumes increase. Motorists are urged to avoid the area and take alternate routes. Northbound I-95 travelers can use the northwest arc of the Capital Beltway, crossing the American Legion Bridge, which is nearly the same distance as traveling I-95 across the Wilson Bridge.

Please use caution when traveling in this area. All construction-related work and dates are subject to change, depending on weather, material and contractor availability or other unforeseen conditions. This improvement is part of the Woodrow Wilson Bridge Project.
