NEWS RELEASE

MDOT SHA OPENS NEW MD 63 (SPEILMAN ROAD) BRIDGE OVER ST. JAMES RUN IN WASHINGTON COUNTY.

Bridge Opening One Week Ahead of Schedule

(August 8, 2017) – Today, the Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) re-opened MD 63 (Spielman Road) over St. James Run in Washington County. MDOT SHA started the bridge replacement in April with the road closure beginning in early June.  The bridge is complete and the road reopened nearly a week ahead of the required August 14 date.

MDOT SHA replaced the deteriorated stone arch culvert and installed a new pre-stressed concrete slab panel bridge. While the roadway re-opening occurred several days ahead of schedule, work will continue on the shoulders to complete to overall project.  For additional information about the construction of the new bridge please click here.

The e-Road Ready 2017 electronic construction brochure is now available by clicking here.  The e-brochure highlights major road construction and maintenance projects in each of MDOT SHA’s seven engineering districts which cover Maryland’s 23 counties.

While SHA and its transportation partners work hard to maintain safe traffic mobility in work zones, each driver need to actively modify his or her driving style to help prevent crashes. Stay alert and look for reduced speed limits, narrow driving lanes and highway workers.  Slow down and don’t follow too closely. Work Zone Safety is in Your Hands.
Maryland drivers can also know before they go by calling 511 or visiting www.md511.org for live traffic updates, including construction delays and lane closures.
